Documents, declarations and marking

IATA marking and document indication that the shipment is restricted to cargo aircraft only and may not be carried on passenger aircraft.

Document that lists, item by item, the checks to be made on the hazardous materials, the packages, the vehicle or the transport unit and the documents before loading, unloading or accepting a shipment for transportation, and in which the person who makes each check records its result.

Consignment note that evidences the contract of carriage under the CMR Convention. It is made out in three original copies signed by the sender and by the carrier: the first copy for the sender, the second copy accompanying the goods and the third copy retained by the carrier.

Declaration signed by the person responsible for the packing of hazardous materials into a container or vehicle, certifying that packing has been carried out in accordance with the regulations.

Document required by regulation II-2/19 of the SOLAS Convention certifying that a ship complies with the construction and equipment requirements for the transportation of packaged hazardous materials, stating the classes that may be carried and the spaces in which each of them is allowed.

Consignment note issued, signed and exchanged by electronic means under the Additional Protocol to the CMR Convention concerning the Electronic Consignment Note, done at Geneva in 2008. It has the same probative value as the paper consignment note and may be used only when the countries concerned are parties to the Protocol.

Individual shipment of a single consignor included in a master shipment, which keeps its own consignor, consignee and transport document while being carried under the master shipment.

Hazard symbols of prescribed shape, colour and dimensions affixed to packages to communicate their hazard class and any subsidiary hazards.

Inscriptions, signs and identification information physically applied on a package, IBC, large packaging, tank, container or vehicle (UN number, proper shipping name, packaging mark, orientation arrows, environmentally hazardous mark, etc.) as required by 5.2.1 ADR/IMDG and 7.1 IATA. The term "marking" refers to the act of applying these marks.

Grouped shipment that brings together several house shipments in the same transport unit or trip, under a single consolidator, a single set of transport documents and a single reference number.

Standardised multimodal transport document for hazardous materials that combines the IMO Dangerous Goods Declaration and the container/vehicle packing certificate.

Total mass of explosive substances (without packagings) of an item or shipment of Class 1, expressed in kilograms.

Net mass (or volume for liquids and gases) of hazardous materials in a package, excluding the packaging.

IATA shipment type indicating that the shipment may be carried on passenger or cargo aircraft, subject to the corresponding quantity limits.

Certificate that the flag State issues to a passenger ship engaged on international voyages, after the surveys of SOLAS regulation I/7; among other data, it states the number of passengers for which the ship is certified (SOLAS regulation I/12).

Enlarged labels affixed to the exterior surfaces of cargo transport units (containers, bulk containers, MEGCs, tank-containers, portable tanks and vehicles) to indicate the hazards of the hazardous materials contained. Placarding is required for road transport (ADR 5.3.1) and for sea transport (IMDG Code 5.3.1); air transport does not use placards, only package marks and labels.

IATA shipper's declaration certifying that the shipment is fully and accurately described and complies with the applicable regulations for air transport.

Document accompanying the shipment that contains the regulatory information required for the transportation of hazardous materials.
