Substances, articles and identification

Terms of the DGAssistant glossary on how a substance or an article is identified in the transport of hazardous materials: the UN number, the proper shipping name and the entries that name particular goods, with their ADR, IMDG and IATA references.

Aerosol or Aerosol Dispenser

An article consisting of any non-refillable receptacle, meeting the requirements of 6.2.6 ADR / 6.2.4 IMDG, made of metal, glass or plastics and containing a gas, compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure (with or without a liquid, paste or powder), and fitted with a release device allowing the contents to be ejected as solid or liquid particles in suspension in a gas, as a foam, paste or powder, or in a liquid or gaseous state.

Substance or article whose transportation is prohibited or authorized only under the conditions prescribed by the applicable transport regulation.

Dry ice / Carbon dioxide, solid

Solid carbon dioxide (UN 1845) used as a refrigerant or coolant; when used to refrigerate other goods, the marking and documentation requirements of chapter 5.5.3 apply.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Cells or batteries (UN 3480, 3481) using a lithium ion electrochemistry, including lithium-ion polymer; subject to specific provisions and watt-hour rating limits.

Lithium Metal Batteries

Cells or batteries (UN 3090, 3091) containing lithium metal or lithium alloys; subject to specific provisions and lithium content limits.

Mixture

A solid, liquid or gaseous combination of two or more substances that do not chemically react with each other under normal conditions of transportation.

Proper Shipping Name

The portion of the entry most accurately describing the goods in the Hazardous Materials List, shown in upper case letters in column 2.

Solution

A homogeneous liquid mixture of two or more chemical compounds or elements that does not undergo segregation under conditions normal to transport.

UN Number

Four-digit identification number assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts to a substance or article, taken from the UN Model Regulations.

UN or ID No.

UN number (four digits) or IATA ID number (e.g. ID 8000 'Consumer commodity'), shown in column 1 of the IATA Dangerous Goods List or columns 1-2 of the ADR/IMDG Hazardous Materials List.

Waste

A substance, solution, mixture or article for which no direct use is envisaged but which is carried for reprocessing, dumping, elimination by incineration or other methods of disposal.
