Regulations, exemptions and special provisions

Agreement concerning the International Transportation of Hazardous Materials by Road, concluded under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It regulates the classification, packing, marking, labeling, documentation and transportation of hazardous materials by road, and it is updated every two years (odd-numbered years).

United Nations Convention on the Contract for the International Transportation of Goods by Road, done at Geneva in 1956, which governs the contract of transportation, the liability of the carrier and the shipment note when the place of taking over and the place of delivery are in different countries and at least one of them is a contracting party.

Revised Emergency Response Procedures for Ships Carrying Hazardous Materials, used in conjunction with the hazardous materials transport document to provide emergency response procedures for incidents at sea.

Provisions allowing very small quantities of certain hazardous materials to be carried with limited application of the regulations, when packed in compliant inner and outer packagings.

Colloquial term used in the United States for hazardous materials, that is, the hazardous materials regulated by Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR). In international transport regulations the equivalent term is hazardous materials.

Dangerous Goods Regulations published annually by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). They are based on the ICAO Technical Instructions and constitute the field manual applied by airlines worldwide for the acceptance and transportation of hazardous materials by air.

International Maritime Hazardous Materials Code, published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It regulates the transportation of hazardous materials by sea in packaged form and it is mandatory under the SOLAS Convention. It is amended every two years.

Quantity threshold per inner packaging, per package or per article up to which hazardous materials may be carried under the relaxations.

Numbered provision applicable to specific entries of the Hazardous Materials List, modifying or supplementing the general requirements.

A code (B, C, D, E) assigned to hazardous materials carried in tanks or bulk that indicates the categories of road tunnels through which their transportation is restricted or prohibited; (-) when no restriction applies.
